Costa Rica elects Luis Guillermo Solis as president

The opposition candidate Luis Guillermo Solís, has managed to defeat convincingly to the officialist Johnny Araya in the presidential elections held in Costa Rica yesterday.

The Citizen Action Party (PAC) took power for the first time after get 78% compared to 22% of the liberationists. In total results, Solis captured 1.3 million votes and surpassed the goal of a million that he proposed to himself optimistically.

The clear advantage of Solis was confirmed in the polls with the attendance of the electorate, which turned out to be the lowest in the history of the country (43% abstention).

In his first speech as president-elect during an event with thousands of supporters at a football field in the university quarter of Montes de Oca, east of the capital, Solis said: “So far the traditional policy.”

Election day passed without incident, as is usual in Costa Rica, but without much enthusiasm on the streets.
