A helicopter with nine soldiers aboard was shot down by pro-Russian insurgents near the town of Slaviansk (eastern Ukraine) on the first day of the truce between the authorities and the separatists.
“Near Slaviansk was downed an Mi-8 of the forces involved in the antiterrorist operation. According to preliminary data, nine soldiers including three crew members were killed,” wrote the “Fact Resistance” group coordinator Dmitri Timchuk on his Facebook account.
The downing of the helicopter was confirmed to the Interfax-Ukraine agency by spokesman for “antiterrorist operation” Vladislav Seleznev.
According by Seleznev, a portable air defense was used in the attack that occurred near Mount Karachun during the takeoff of the aircraft.
