Tungurahua volcano increased activity in recent days
Despite staying in “low levels for almost two months,” the Tungurahua volcano registered yesterday an increase in its activity, according to the Geophysical Institute (IG for its Spanish acronym) of the National Polytechnic School.
The Colossus experienced “a small emission” and although “any gunshot or associated noise were heard,” “an emission column with a moderate/high load of ash” could be appreciated, which surpassed a thousand meters height from the crater, said the institution in a statement.
The authorities recommended to take the necessary security measures in presence of ash fall, including: covering mouth and nose to prevent respiratory infections and protect water just as food.
Washington Cando, Zonal Director of 911, reported that they maintain constant monitoring with cameras that are located in various districts of Tungurahua and especially the one located in the area known as “Ojos de Volcan” in Baños, to immediately coordinate in case of emergency.
