Truth Commission confirmed 434 dead or missing during dictatorship in Brazil

The Truth Commission of Brazil (CNV) confirmed 434 dead or missing during the military dictatorship (1964-1985), according to the final report that on Wednesday received an shocked President Dilma Rousseff, tortured during the regime.

“The third volume of this report describes the history of each of the 434 dead and missing politicians (during the dictatorship),” said commission coordinator, Pedro de Abreu Dallari, during the presentation of the report to Rousseff in the palace Government.

To date, some 400 dead in Brazil were unofficially recognized during the dictatorship.

Dallari said that more than 1,000 testimonies in two years and seven months of work were heard since its inception, and prepared a 4,400-page report, almost 30 years after the end of the dictatorship.

“We respect and reverence to all those who fought for democracy,” said on her part the president, who said that the new generations and families of victims deserve the truth.

The commission was created in 2011 by the Rousseff itself an former guerrilla fighter who was imprisoned and was tortured by the military regime and has also provided testimony to this workgroup.
