Ecuador is no longer the main supplier of bananas in the European Union, Colombia is, according to Ledesma

The Executive Director of the Ecuadorian Association of Banana Exporters anticipats that if El Niño does not affect the banana sector until December, it will exceed 310 million boxes of fruit, setting a sales record. He regretted that the delay in payments incurred by major markets such as Russia and other countries affects the liquidity of exporters considering that the fruit should be paid to producers in eight days, even three or four capitals are needed to comply with the operation.

He also said that Ecuador was no longer the main supplier of bananas in the European Union (EU), at the moment Colombiais surpasses Ecuador. The reason: we do not have a trade agreement with the EU.

According to Ledesma, banana is the activity that can generate more foreign exchange and jobs, but “untie the knots” taking a new legal framework, removing excessive red tape, penalties and implementing trade agreements.
