On at least three occasions in the last month, President Rafael Correa´s transitory provision has returned to talk about the crossed death, a figure that was established in the Constitution of Montecristi. The resource involves the destitution of the National Assembly, following the endorsement of the Constitutional Court and a referendum.

Before a potential loss of the parliamentary majority of Alianza Pais in 2017, the President said that his successor could resort to the crossed death. This means, he said on Friday during the discussion board with media from Cotopaxi, that he could run for elections again.

Although during the recent approval of the constitutional amendments, a transitional provision was also approved, which prevents Correa and the current Assembly members who already have two terms in office, run for the next elections. The possibility of a crossed death under this events would immediately benefit them.

According to Section 148 of the Constitution, the President, during his first three years in office, may dissolve the National Assembly in specific cases, as difficulting the governance. The Assembly may also dismiss the president.
