On December 18, Julio Pincay and 60 of his colleagues, all construction workers, were cleared of their work. Their employer, a construction company of Guayaquil, was forced to suspend the execution of two real estate works in Samborondon, for lack of financing.

The surprising notification of their separation caused grief among these workers, who expected to spend the holidays with their families without financial troubles.

But this is not an isolated case. The activity, that employs half a million people nationwide, records layoffs fluctuating between 30% and 60%, according to reports of the Chamber of the Construction Industry.

Two specialized consulting firms notice the labor situation experienced by other productive sectors in the country, with a similar reality.

The Deloitte firm mentions that the turnover rate and layoffs in companies is between 8.2% and 27.6%, in an analysis made on the impact of the economic situation in the wage and labor market.

The information, updated to November 2015, is based on survey conducted to 166 multinational companies and 205 national companies that belong to the services, industrial and commercial sectors.

For the AMS Andean Ecuador consulting firm, the layoffs in companies represented between a 7.5% and 30.7% in the first half of 2015.
