Private exports revert five years of upward trend

Since 2010, non-oil exports of Ecuador had no negative figures. Some years more, some less, but figures had increased. Between January and November 2010 and the same period of 2011, the amazing figure of 1,407 million was recorded.

In 2015 the trend changed. With prices of tuna and shrimp swimming upstream and with a coffee diluted exporters failed to receive 719 million dollars, at the end of November with an aggregate of $ 10,666,000. In total, private foreign sales contracted by 6.3%.

The industry knows its weaknesses: lack of new markets, high cost of raw materials and services, expensive labor, excessive requirements in some cases, loss of competitiveness against countries that devalue.

In fact, the banana producers, who make up the country’s largest export industry, were the first to attack these problems, and after a series of meetings with the Minister of Agriculture, they not only managed to set the price of banana, but to relax some standards that, as they manifested, were detrimentral for them.
