Paquisha, 35 years of this important name in the history of Ecuador

Posted On 23 Jan 2016

At 11:30 in January 22th, 1981, “a Peruvian military helicopter flew the Ecuadorian military positions in Paquisha and Mayaicu, in the Condor mountain range.” An hour later, at 12:35, it returned to the scene and strafed a military post and a helicopter of the Ecuadorian Army that was on the ground. Due to the attack, Lieutenant Hugo Valencia, pilot of the Land Forces was seriously injured.

This is the note of protest submitted the same day at 22:00 by the Foreign Ministry of Ecuador to the ambassador of Peru at the time, Jose Carlos Mariategui, who was summoned to formally complain about the aggression of the Peruvian Army to the Paquisha detachment, located in an area not demarcated by the Rio Protocol, but for the Peruvian side it was not a demarcated land.

The attack occurred nearly 40 years after the Peruvian invasion of Ecuadorian territory -Santa Rosa, El Oro province, on July 5th, 1941,- which ended on January 29th, 1942 with The Rio de Janeiro Protocol, so-called of peace, friendship and limits, signed in the Itamaraty palace and which reduced part of Ecuador´s territory.
