The shrimp sector aims to further increase its production to offset the international falling of prices and proposes to the government a technification plan of its farms.

Last week, at a meeting with the Ministry of Production, the industry proposed the introduction of new technology for shrimp farming, with the promise of increasing production volumes and be more efficient, stated Jose Antonio Camposano, President of the Aquaculture chamber. The sector has been growing a 15% annually, but for him, this growth will not be sustainable over time without technology.

As part of the plan, they asked the Government to exempt from taxes the imported machinery required to technify the more than 3,000 farms in the country. Now they pay a 15% of tariffs and between 20% and 25% of safeguards. “We have made an official request through the Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade to review these taxes at a Comex session, so that the sector can acquire these equipments …” he said.

It is estimated that its implementation would require an investment of about $ 2,000 per hectare, so funding will be also required.
