32% of Ecuadorian pineapples are exported to Chile

Posted On 22 Sep 2017

Ecuadornews:

In the last nine years, the pineapple trade has had ups and downs. The best season was 2009, when it reached $ 44 million and 100,000 tons, according to figures from the Institute for the Promotion of Exports and Investments (ProEcuador). After that, it fell. In 2010 low international prices caused producers to migrate to other crops, which were more profitable, such as maize and palm.

“The fruit requires more dedication and technical care, it is necessary to invest a lot to produce a pineapple,” said Roberto Castillo, president of the Association of Pineapple Producers of Ecuador (Asopiña). The situation began to change in

2012, when the Ecuadorian product was exported to Chile. Now, according to ProEcuador, that country is the leading destination for fruit, which accounted for 32% of total sales last year. One of the advantages is the shipping cost, which is much lower than the United States and Europe. (I)
