56% of women in the region work

Between 2004 and 2014, women in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) increased their participation in the labor market and improved their income, reducing the gap with men; however, equality is not yet achieved. The latest UN Women report reveals that currently, 56% of women in the region are in the labor market, while men´s figure is 85%.

The representative of UN Women in Ecuador Bibiana Aído Almagro said that the study points to the economy as one of the key factors in the progress and empowerment of women and nations, in a context of inequalities.

Almagro mentioned that women subsidize the market economy through domestic work and unpaid care, spending more than three times the time spent by men in the domestic sphere.

Although the labor gap has narrowed, there are still differential factors. For example, unemployment among women is 50% higher than among men, and the wage gap persists even in those cases of women who have achieved the highest academic achievement (20% regional average). (I)
