Madrid – The multinational Iberdrola, one of the largest electricity companies in the world, and the Club of Excellence in Sustainability recognized on Wednesday the National Institute of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy of Ecuador´s work, for its project “Study of the viability of bioethanol production from the enzymatic hydrolysis of the seed shell of Jatropha Curcas (Piñón) “.

The initiative, financed by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (Aecid), won in the Public Sector category, the second edition of the Iberdrola Awards for International Energy Cooperation.

The research project of INER is part of the government initiative “Zero fossil fuels for Galápagos”, of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and is held at the headquarters of the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP-Portoviejo), in collaboration with the Center of Energy, Environmental and Technological Research of Spain (Cinemat). Its objective is to “eradicate the use of petroleum-based fuels in the generation of electrical energy on the islands, replacing it with pine nut oil and promoting energy production with wind and solar parks,” said the Embassy of Ecuador in a statement.
