Andean Parliament supports Espinosa’s candidacy to preside over the UN Assembly

Posted On 23 Mar 2018

Ecuadornews:

The plenary of the Andean Parliament today endorsed in Bogota the candidacy of the Ecuadorian chancellor, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, for the presidency of the 73rd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), which will be held between September of this year and the same month of 2019.

The agency will support the candidacy of Espinosa for “her personal qualities, being a worthy representative of Andean and South American values and culture, whose leadership, commitment, effort, dedication and openness to dialogue, will contribute to the revitalization of the work” of the assembly .

The foreign minister presented on February 26 in Geneva to the United Nations representatives of the Latin American and Caribbean Group (Grulac), the candidacy of Ecuador to preside over the UN General Assembly in the period 2018-2019.

Her proposal is to transfer to that presidency the policy of national dialogue of the head of State, Lenin Moreno, in order to reach agreements for peace and development.

In that sense, the Andean Parliament argued that it supports the Ecuadorian aspiration because within its purposes are “to contribute to the consolidation of international peace and justice, and to ensure respect for human rights within the framework of existing international instruments.

Likewise, he valued that Espinosa establishes for his candidacy as key elements and strategies of action, among others, “to deepen and expand mitigation, adaptation and early warning efforts in the fight against climate change”.

The plenary of the Andean Parliament also assured that this is an opportunity for the South American countries to assume that position of “so important political and diplomatic representation” after 19 years.

The candidacy, according to the agency, promotes “an ambitious but coherent and achievable agenda, necessary at a time when multilateralism, democracy and governance face political, social and economic challenges,” which demand “exercising a transformative, inclusive and pluralist leadership”

The Andean Parliament is based in Bogotá. Its current president is the Chilean deputy Fernando Meza.

This Parliament is part of the Andean Community Integration System and promotes cooperation between the legislative powers of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile.

The functions of the agency are to collaborate with the legislative harmonization of the Andean countries, promote citizen participation, strengthen Andean integration with a view to regional integration and exercise political control over the Andean Integration System. (I)
