Posted On 12 Nov 2018

Ecuadornews:

In the northwest of the province, an association of producers operates and delivers the fruit of their work to companies such as Café Minerva.

MiltonRivadeneira, born 53 years ago in the rural parish of San José de Minas, hasdedicated much of his life to the countryside. It has not been easy for him tomaintain the love of agricultural work because his father, who was dedicated tothe cultivation of sugarcane, encouraged him to dedicate himself to otheractivities.

Today, however, his passion is the production of quality coffee in the northwestern region of Imbabura. He became interested in the fruit almost incidentally. He traveled to Colombia in 2000 to work in a company dedicated to marble.

He fell in love with a Colombian girl, whose father talked to her all the time about the secrets of the grain. After the sentimental relationship and back in Ecuador, he devised the project to establish a coffee farm.

Thefirst step was to choose the right location for the venture. He contracted landstudies from different parts of the country, then evaluated and compared landprices. After an analysis, he acquired 50 hectares (ha) in the Corazón delGuadual community, La Carolina parish. And 15 years ago he created the LaCorazonada farm, 70 km from Ibarra.

In 2015 he offered his product to the company Café Minerva and after negotiations and verifications is one of the suppliers of the firm. Fifteen hectares of the property are dedicated to the cultivation of grain. In the last harvest he obtained 802 quintals, a figure that is almost a world record, according to the entrepreneur.

For thenext harvest, between April and June 2019, he expects to obtain 1,000 bags.Attributes productivity, first, to the location of the farm. It is in a kind ofcanyon, which – in his opinion – gives it natural shade. Another characteristicis that, as in Ethiopia, the cradle of coffee, Rivadeneira uses little waterand fertilizers in measure. In addition, sow a seed of the area, named Geronimocoffee, and that is resistant to pests such as rust. (I)
