Ecuadorians see the future of the country with pessimism, reveals a survey

Posted On 12 Feb 2019

Ecuadornews:

Six out of every 10 Ecuadorians think that their country is on the wrong path and 40% believe that the situation will impoverish, according to a survey released Monday.

The study of the Cedatos-Gallup firm revealed that 70% of the future causes concern, frustration and sadness. Among the causes of the current economic situation that respondents identified are underemployment (26%) and corruption (14%), among others.

According to figures from the Ministry of Finance this year a fiscal deficit of around 10,000 million dollars is expected, which has caused delays in payments to public employees and state suppliers. To cover the accounts, Ecuador has asked for credits -especially China- and has issued bonds, the last for 1,000 million in January.

The survey highlighted that 59.5% disapprove of the management of President Lenin Moreno, which began in May 2017, while 33.1% approve it. In addition, 59.9% do not believe in the president’s word. Shortly after his start, Moreno had a credibility of 67%.

The study was conducted in January on 2,120 interviews in 17 of the country’s main cities with a margin of error of 3.4%. (I)
