Al Jazeera journalists are sentenced to 7 years imprisonment in Egypt
A court in Cairo, Egypt has sentenced today a 7 to 10 years prison sentence to a group of journalists from Al Jazeera accused of spreading false news in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood thesis.
Australian Peter Greste, Al Jazeera’s correspondent based in Kenya, Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy, Chief of Al Jazeera English Bureau in Egypt, and the Egyptian producer Mohamed Bajer are among the sentenced.
The trial, which had aroused great international interest, represents a new example of the repressive campaign launched by the Egyptian regime to silence any dissenting voices, whether in the political or media level.
“We’re going to appeal to the court of cassation because there have been many serious procedural flaws. For example, we are not allowed to see the evidence presented by the prosecution, which is absolutely illegal, ” said Said Shaaban, member of the defense team.
