Alexis Mera, former legal secretary of Rafael Correa, was sentenced to eight years in prison for the Sobornos Case 2012-2016, in 2020.

Former Secretary of the Presidency, Alexis Mera, on his departure from the Judicial Police before leaving for Latacunga, on September 24, 2020.
The decision was made by Galo Rodríguez, Ambato Penitentiary Guarantees Judge (Tungurahua), on the morning of January 27, 2023. Alexis Mera will have to leave the Jail from that city and continue showing up once a week.
At the moment, Diego Guarderas, Mera’s lawyer, is processing the ex-official’s release ballot.
Instead of the prison, the former official will have to fulfill the weekly presentation at the Litoral Penitentiary. In his case, it was not deemed necessary to use an electronic shackle.
Mera’s case
Mera, like Rafael Correa, Jorge Glas, Vinicio Alvarado and other leaders of Correismo, were sentenced in 2020 by the case Sobornos 2012-2016.
In that process, the Prosecutor’s Office demonstrated a bribery, since the Correa government managed and charged bribes to state contractors, in exchange for the award of public contracts. And with that money they paid Alianza Pais proselytizing activities.
Mera’s pre-release had been requested in October 2022, when the sentence was calculated. The Ambato Prison certified that until January 2023, the former legal secretary of Corroismo already carried three years, six months and six days of the eight in prison.
This means that Mera has already fulfilled the 44% of his sentence. And, as the Sobornos case is processed with the repealed Penal Code, exceeded in 116 days the requirement required by that rule to obtain pre-release.
