Alianza PAIS supports reelection after 2017
The legislative bloc of Alianza PAIS (AP) endorsed Wednesday the request of the president and leader of the government movement, Rafael Correa, to amend the Constitution and allow the indefinite reelection for popular election authorities. This would be implemented from May 2017, ie after the general elections of February of that year.
The measure would prevent the president and the assembly members who are in office for two consecutive periods (the case of Correa and 38 legislators), may be reelected.
In a statement, AP referred to the intention of Correa of not running for reelection. “We are confident that from anywhere he will continue to be a key factor to the transformation process of Ecuador and in his capacity as president of the Alianza PAIS movement he will take the necessary decisions to ensure the continuity of the political project.”
