The total investment in the modernization of the Manabí, Los Ríosand Loja corvettes was $ 70 million, this cost is three times lower than in theinternational industry. Three corvettes or missile ships that AstillerosNavales Ecuatorianos (Astinave EP) received in 2014 were equipped and two willbe delivered this Thursday, November 15 to the Ministry of Defense.
The public company, responsible for the maintenance andconstruction of ships in the defense and industrial maritime sector, prioritized the national workforce for its repair and modernization.
This generated a saving of about $ 170 million. Camilo Delgado,general manager of Astinave EP, explained that abroad the price of laboramounted to $ 80 million for each ship, while in Ecuador it cost $ 70 millionin total.
The corvettes have dissuasive means, such as guns, a helicopter and a speedboat. They are part of the program “Neutralization of illicit activities and timely assistance to emergencies in the aquatic spaces” of the Defense portfolio. The units that will be delivered this Thursday, November 15 at Astinave dock in Guayaquil are called Manabí and Loja.
The Corvette Los Ríos is already operational. The ships were acquired in the 70s in Italy. When Astinave EP received them, their technological, operational and logistic life had culminated, so they went through a process of integral technification.
One third of the public company’s staff, made up of 650 people, participated in this project, said Delgado. The boats can remain on patrol and surveillance at sea for up to 15 days. Inside, 60 people can be transported (10 officers and 50 crew members with different specialties).
The software of the naval combat system, also developed in the country, allows to operate the ship and its armaments, such as bow cannons, missiles and torpedoes. By its tactical panorama it is possible to see everything that is around it with a range of 50 kilometers of surface and 200 aerial meters.
Astinave will provide the maintenance and support of thevessels, which will also optimize resources. (I)
