Yesterday The journalist and former director of News, said farewell from his talk show on the seized channel Gamatv to accept the nomination made by the regime leader for the position of Superintendent of information. The contest to choose the best candidate for the position began yesterday.

“I have accepted and I have the honor of leading the slate submitted by the President to appoint me as the first superintendent of information. This designation is a process of citizen oversight and appeal by the Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control, a process which takes refuge and basic respect. This prevents me to continue carrying out my activities in this media,” he said yesterday in front of the cameras.

The list of nominees appointed by the Ecuadorian president, Rafael Correa, was read by Vice President of the Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPC), Monica Vanegas. Among the names are Maria Elena Aguirre and Wilman Sánchez. These three candidates have been part of the public media and state agencies in recent years.

Moreover the Regulatory Council will set criteria’s to analyze possible discriminatory contents. Hence the assemblywoman Soledad Buendia (AP) asked for the Council to see to it, with the basis of Article 63 of the Communications Law, about how certain media should regulate their content, especially the newspaper Extra.

Buendia said it must “keep promoting sexism or discriminatory practices” showing scantily half naked women on the covers of newspapers. According to the president of the Council, Patricio Barriga, the Communications Law shall establish criteria for determining whether such content is discriminatory or not.
