Case Diario El Universo: Correa will Appeal Ruling and Fight for the $ 80 Million
Vera Alembert, defense attorney for President Rafael Correa, appealed the sentence given by judge Juan Paredes, because he believes that the compensation should not be less than $ 80 million from the initial complaint against former opinion editor of El Universo, Emilio Palacio, its directors and El Universo Newspaper Company.
The lawyer insisted, however, that the prosecution side is open to talk as long as the media “rectifies” and starts “doing well its job.”
That same night, President Correa held a press conference where he said he will not even take 20 cents of the $ 40 million that he might get on the trial, but he said he will run to the last stages in the lawsuit.
“They will pay what they will have to pay. And I know what to do with that money. I will not even touch 20 cents of it. I’m not going to take a penny. Nor from a person like Emilio Palacio or the Perez Family.” “(…) we will keep fighting until the last consecuences in the courts and at the end when we win, I will take the appropriate decision.” (BG)
