Chavez Returned to Venezuela

Posted On 04 Jul 2011
After spending nearly a month in Cuba, where he underwent surgery due to a cancerous tumor, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez returned to Caracas. He traveled on Monday morning. “We arrived at dawn, when the sun was rising. We’re very happy to be home,” Chavez said.

Chavez was greeted at the Maiquetia airport, on the outskirts of Caracas, by the Vice President Elias Jaua, his brother Adán Chávez and several ministers of his cabinet. “I’m fine, I feel good (…) I return to the center of Bolivar,” he said. “We are in the same country. Cuba, Venezuela are the same country. I’m happy,” the president added.

“It’s the beginning of the return. I am under strict medical check,” he said. There are no disclosed details of the severity of Chavez’s disease so far, the only public information is that he has to follow a strict diet and an exercise program.

Upon his arrival, the president announced that he will not be able to attend the Bicentennial of Independence, scheduled for Tuesday. (MS)
