Chavez Starts Housing Program for the Poor

Venezuela housing program
Months before Venezuela’s presidential elections, President Hugo Chavez is rushing the delivery of subsidised houses to the lower classes, which are being financed through oil revenues.
Under the premise that no Venezuelan should live without decent housing, the government started last year the “Great Venezuelan Housing Mission” to compensate the 2,7 million unit shortfall and give the Venezuelans “the greatest amount of happiness possible.”
These homes are being built all over Venezuela, and are assigned through a national registry that signed up more than 3,6 million families between May and October. The units’ range in value between $16,000 and $115,000, under this plan the government will subsidise 10% and 100% of the value of each home. (AV)
