Cristian ‘Chucho’ Benitez

The former player of El Nacional of Ecuador, Santos Laguna (Mexico), Birmingham City (England), America (Mexico), and attacker of the Ecuadorian national team, Christian ‘chucho’ Benítez, died today in Qatar due to a cardiac arrest, reported his representative, Jose Chamorro, to the State channel Gama TV.

According to the media, Benitez, who had been signed three weeks ago by the club Al-jaish SC of Qatar, was complaining of strong abdominal pain, so he was transferred to a hospital, where he suffered a cardiac arrest.

For his part, Al-jaish Qatar SC club issued the respective condolences through his Twitter account. “Eljaish directive, extends its sincere condolences to the family of the soccer player, Christian Benítez, who passed away today”, said the tweet.

The news was picked up and released by the major media in Ecuador and Latin America. The President of the Republic, Rafael Correa, and the Sports Minister, José Francisco Cevallos, from Venezuela, where they participating in a bi-national cabinet, expressed their  condolences to the family of the deceased and provided that the authorities give facilities for procedures that these cases require.
