CONAIE organizes event to help detainees by protests
Sunday organizations will hold a charity marathon in El Arbolito park. They are seeking donations for the detainees and wounded in the protests of August 13.
The leader of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (Conaie), Jorge Herrera, along with lawyers and various trade union leaders said there are still 25 persons deprived of liberty for alleged sabotage and affray.
Katy Betancourt, leader of Conaie’s women, said that after 10:00 there will be music and cultural activities in the park and there will be a solidarity box. People can donate money or food to be distributed among the families of the victims, since many of them are breadwinners of their families.
According to Herrera, as a product of the indigenous uprising there were 104 arrests, and there would still be 25 persons who are deprived of freedom. He stated that the uprising continues in the context of what determines Section 98 of the Constitution: the right to resistance, and therefore, he ratified the call for September 16 of a national mobilization that is expected to be welcomed in 24 provinces, including Galapagos.
