Contecon Guayaquil, first port with Neutral Carbon Certification
Ecuadornews:

Contecon GuayaquilS.A. (CGSA) is the first port in Ecuador to obtain the Neutral Carbon certification, issued by the consultancy and environmental rating agency Sambito. This distinction recognizes the strong and priority commitment of the company to the environment.
The term”Neutral Carbon” refers to the state in which the net emissions of green house gases sent to the environment are zero. The ultimate goal is not to affect the natural concentration of greenhouse gases that exist in the atmosphere. Because CO2 is the main greenhouse gas, the term “NeutralCO2” or “Neutral Carbon” is often equated with “neutralclimate”.
Being “carbon neutral” means that the final result of an activity, a process or aproject such as the production of a good, the provision of a service or itsconsumption has not emitted more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere thanthose that could capture or remove
The certification conferred to Contecon responds to the company’s policies, translated into sustainable initiatives such as recycling and the incorporation of technologies that reduce the impact of the operations of the country’s main port.
It is not the first time that CGSA receives an environmental certification. “The CARBONONEUTRO certification positions CGSA in its efforts focused on balancing greenhouse gas emissions with reduction and compensation practices. It is the commitment acquired to counteract any emission of equipment such as: cranes, dock tractors, air conditioners and any other contaminating source, or in turn, compensate for it, through the sponsorship of forests and protected areas,”they said in a newsletter to the press.
Contecon has formed the Neutral Carbon Committee, which is made up of members from all CGSA areas, and who will follow up on the execution of phases such as: inventory of emissions, identification of possible mechanisms to reduce pollution and sponsorship of 14,000 hectares of natural areas: ten thousand of mangrove and four thousand 600 of native forest.
