Corn farmers seek support in the price setting

Last weekend corn growers of Los Rios province sold their harvested quintals at the Ventanas silo plant, which is part of the public enterprise National Storage Unit One EP. Given the lack of demand in stores and the price reduction in those markets, farmers preferred to resort to the public company where the payment of the official price is guaranteed.

The public company buys corn since April 1, at a minimum support price of $ 14.90 per quintal with 13% humidity and 1% of impurities, a price set by the Ministry of Agriculture (Magap). In a nearby collection center the offer was nine dollars. “That does not cover costs; I prefer to come straight here,” said one of the corn farmers, according to a MAGAP newsletter.
