Cuba could increase its oil production by 50%
Cuba could increase by 50% its oil production in the short term using modern technologies of “enhanced recovery” in wells, pending further exploration offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, according to experts.
With these technologies Cuban oil production would increase from 20,000 to 25,000 barrels per day, up to 50% more than the 50,000 barrels that are produced today, said the expert Jorge Pinon, University of Texas at Austin (USA).
Pinon also explained that more important than acquiring new equipment for enhanced recovery is the “application expertise and the know-how”, which is why a committee of U.S. experts, including former Senator Bob Graham, visited Cuba in January to discuss safety issues in oil exploration in the Gulf, near the coast of the United States.
