With the forecast of El Nino phenomenon, dams that protect 30,000 hectares in the Manuel J. Calle system, which starts in La Troncal (Canar) and ends at Puerto Inca (Guayas), have not been repaired or haven´t been given maintenance.

According to the Board of Users, enormous tracts of sugarcane, rice, bananas, cocoa and short-cycle crops are in danger. In the El Niño phenomenon of 1998 10,000 hectares were flooded. “Now it will be worse, most of the gates are not operating and the Culebra river remains without maintenance,” explain its executives on a tour.

The dams of Rio Chico and Monserrate, in Babahoyo, are in a difficult situation too, these protect the production of 981 farmers, mainly rice and soybeans. Water has “eaten away” the walls that protect not only the riverbeds, but also the surrounding crops, indicates Eulogio Garcia, a resident of the sector.
