President Daniel Noboa and his counterpart from El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, meeting on May 31, 2024.

The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, arrived in El Salvador this Friday, May 31, 2024, where he held a bilateral meeting with his counterpart from that Central American country, Nayib Bukele, on the eve of him assuming a second term.

According to official information, it was “a fraternal dialogue”, where Noboa “emphasized his interest in learning about the ‘Territorial Control Plan’ and other policies implemented for the notable improvement of the security situation in El Salvador.”

At the meeting, both presidents discussed common topics to strengthen the bilateral relationship, such as security, irregular migration, tourism, trade, among others, the Presidency of the Republic said in a statement.

“We come with a message of peace and collaboration between the two countries. We have similar situations, similar struggles and I believe that by working firmly and together we are going to move our people forward,” said the Ecuadorian head of state.

Security Dialogues

The leaders talked about some of the security strategies that each country has implemented.

The objective of this point of analysis was to exchange experiences that, on both the Ecuadorian and Salvadoran sides, allow for improving internal security.

Ecuador expressed its interest in learning about the security and anti-gang model, and other policies implemented in El Salvador in this regard.

Cooperation on irregular migration

In addition, Noboa emphasized that both Ecuador and El Salvador must strengthen mechanisms for information on Ecuadorian citizens who enter and transit this Central American country, on their route to the United States.

He considered that it is essential to weave regional response spaces to protect migrants from transnational organized crime that is dedicated to human trafficking.

The Ecuadorian president arrived on the afternoon of May 31 at the airport of the Central American country. The first lady, Lavinia Valbonesi, also traveled with Noboa.

According to official decree No. 286, the official delegation for this trip includes five officials, such as Chancellor Gabriela Sommerfeld, his head of security, among others.

Noboa, the first president to arrive in El Salvador for Bukele’s inauguration, also met with investors from the SIMAN group, a holding company with two trading areas: Alsicorp and Unicomer, known for their influence in Central America.

The holding company markets fashion items, footwear, jewelry, electronics, decoration and furniture, as well as cosmetics and perfumery.

These meetings allow the country, in the opinion of the Presidency, “to expand the field of Ecuadorian business models towards spaces of electronic and commercial innovation.”

Bilateral dialogue with Costa Rica

Noboa also held a bilateral meeting with the president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, a country with which Ecuador signed a trade agreement last year.

In this meeting, also, “issues such as joint cooperation to strengthen democracy and respect for Human Rights were addressed,” the Presidency indicated in its X account.

In addition, “the progress in the fight against illicit trafficking, organized crime, and the commitment to the search for new forms of cooperation in security, commercial relations and the environment were recognized.”

While on Saturday, June 1, at 09:00, he will attend the investiture ceremony of the president of El Salvador.
