President Daniel Noboa and the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele.
President Daniel Noboa, whom many have called the ‘Ecuadorian Bukele’ , although he has denied it, will attend the inauguration of the Salvadoran president, who will begin a second term on June 1.
During this visit, a bilateral meeting is planned between the Ecuadorian president and Nayib Bukele, as reported by the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry this Thursday, May 30, 2024.
Noboa’s agenda also includes a bilateral meeting with the president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves Robles.
Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld will accompany President Noboa to the inauguration event and to the bilateral meetings.
Regarding the supposed similarities between the leaders, Noboa has distanced himself.
“Neither do I believe I am (like Bukele), nor do I believe that my Government considers itself as something similar to what is happening in El Salvador,” said Noboa at the EFE Tribune – Casa de América held in Madrid on May 17, 2024.
Bukele’s controversial re-election
Nayib Bukele will begin a second term in El Salvador after sweeping the polls on February 4. He became the first president of that country’s democratic era to seek immediate re-election.
He will be the first president to repeat his term in office, even though the Constitution does not allow it.
Bukele was able to run after, in 2021, the Supreme Court, which had been appointed by a Congress with a pro-government majority without following the legal procedure, changed the criteria for interpreting the Constitution.
