Drought in the Horn of Africa Affecs Millions
Posted On 28 Jun 2011
On Tuesday, Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for the UN’s Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) informed that more than ten million people suffer from the worst drought in 60 years in the Horn of Africa.
The lack of rains has caused “a major food crisis in several regions of the coast of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, which is close to famine,” she said.
“In Somalia, one child in three is malnourished. The rates in the most affected regions (by child malnutrition) are more than twice the level of urgency (15%) and it is likely to increase,” she added. (MS)
