The International Strategy of Narcotics Control Report released by U.S. reveals that Ecuador “is a country of great importance on cocaine and heroin traffic”.
At least 220 metric tons transit the Ecuador every year, of which 60% goes to the markets of USA and the rest to Europe.
According to that document, traffickers exploit the border regions and river and sea routes “that are difficult to monitor.”
The final report of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) shows that Ecuador is the third largest country in the world on cocaine seizures (9% of drug world-wide), just below Colombia (35%) and the U.S. (15%). (MZ)
