Foreign Minister Gustavo Manrique said that the Government is holding talks with Washington to open a care center for migrants who want to travel to the United States.

Among the measures adopted by the government of Joe Biden, in the United States, to reduce the numbers of irregular migrants, is the announcement of the creation of Regional Immigration Processing Centers (RPCs, for its acronym in English).
The first RPCs will open in Colombia and Guatemala. But the Ecuadorian government also wants to participate in the initiative. This was confirmed by Foreign Minister Gustavo Manrique, on July 6, 2023.
The head of Ecuadorian diplomacy stated that he has held talks with the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, so that Ecuador is part of this initiative and has an office in the country.
The Government wants to reduce the irregular migration of Ecuadorians to the United States, which grew at the beginning of 2023. This seeks to reduce the risks that migrants face, even within United States territory, due to the processes they may face.
In an interview on Radio Centro, Manrique said that the intention is for migrants to have the opportunity to travel regularly, through the process established by these centers in the United States.
According to the Ecuadorian foreign minister, this could be beneficial for both countries. First, Ecuador advocates for the family reunification of migrants. And second, he believes that the United States could benefit from circular migration.
According to Manrique, this would imply allowing the migration, temporarily, of Ecuadorians who want to work in the United States. The idea would be that they can do it legally for a period of the year and then return to Ecuador.
