Ecuadorian Chancellor Rejects Comments of EU
The trial made by the Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa against El Universo newspaper is based on libel accusations. However, the European Union (EU) is watching the judicial process very closely since its sanctions affect the bilateral treatment.
Chancellor Patiño sent a letter to the European Union expressing his contempt and rejection to the words of Catherine Ashton, regarding her comments about taking actions if the trial favours Correa’s demand, since it threatens the free speech.
Patiño stated “The Ecuadorian government considers the word of Miss Ashton as a grave intervention in the internal affairs of Ecuador. Such comments have the intention of interfering with the administration of justice, if the final judgment in this process favor the party credited as Mrs. Ashton as the right one.”
According to the Chancellor there shouldn’t exist any kind of collateral effect if the sentence favours Correa. Patiño tried to downplay the statements of the representative of Foreign Affairs of the EU, Catherine Ashton. (AV)
