Several women, between Ecuadorians and Colombians, were forced into prostitution in Spain, as part of a human trafficking network, the Police of that European country reported on June 13.
According to information from the Spanish Police, the operation left 16 detainees and dismantled two organizations accused of prostituting women in vulnerable situations.
Seven of the detainees entered provisional prison after this operation.
The alerts came from Murcia and Almería, where it was reported that several women were victims of human trafficking in brothels.
They were recruited in their countries of origin and convinced through deception, due to their financial need, to travel to Spain, the authority said in a statement.
“Women were forced to engage in prostitution under abusive conditions. In an intimidating and secluded environment, they were controlled through video surveillance cameras, they had to ask permission to go out and they could not refuse any service,” the police said.
Women received only 50% of the pay and were forced to use drugs. When they were freed from sexual exploitation, they worked in commissioned roles in brothels.
