Emilio Palacio Requested Political Asylum in the US
Emilio Palacio the former editor of opinion for El Universo newspaper, defended today his arguments after requesting political asylum in the United States. Palacio is facing a three-year sentence due to the demand made by the Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa.
This Wednesday, Palacio attended the Miami Asylum Office of Citizenship and Immigration of the United States accompanied by his attorneys. Palacio’s family also attended the appointment. Palacio left his country to “escape from a campaign of constant harassment and persecution,” orchestrated by Correa.
Now the former 58-year old journalist fears to be processed by the Ecuadorian authorities, since he would be immediately be incarcerated due to the sentence of the trial, if he should return to his country. (AV)
