Five of the six Ecuadorian medals in Tokyo 2020 were obtained by women

The Ecuadorian Olympic and Paralympic medalists of the Tokyo 2020 Games were honored this Wednesday, September 8, 2021 by President Guillermo Lasso at the Carondelet Palace. Neisi Dajomes, gold in weightlifting, highlighted that of the six medals obtained, five were from Afro-descendant women.

In the Olympics, the delegation obtained gold from Dajomes and Richard Carapaz, along with silver from Tamara Salazar. In the Paralympics, Poleth Mendes got a gold, while Anaís Méndez and Kiara Rodríguez each won a bronze.

“Black women have made history, I am honored to be an Afro-descendant,” said the weightlifter. On the other hand, he stressed that as an athlete and as a citizen he would like to have the support continue for all generations and that he hopes that the support is not only in success but from the beginning.

For his part, Polet Méndes, Paralympic medalists, thanked for the recognition since he pointed out that the great effort was reflected in his work. “The medal I got is for all the Ecuadorian people,” he said.
