Posted On 08 Jul 2011
The Ecuadorian government decided to create a State Company for Arms Control of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces and incorporate the informals to the military system manufacturers to control and regulate the manufacture of firearms that are given to the organized crime gangs.
The Joint Command made the proposal to President Correa during the meeting of the Security Sector (CSS) on Tuesday in Guayaquil as an urgent measure due to the increased insecurity in the country.
“The production of handmade weapons means a problem for national security, it’s beyond control… intermediaries of criminal gangs keep rising,” said Coordinating Minister for Internal and External Security, Homero Arellano.
