Government works on Temporary Protected Status for Ecuadorians in the US
The National Government made a request to the United States for the approval of Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This is expected to benefit Ecuadorians not regularized in the North American country.
Chancellor Gabriela Sommerfeld explained this Wednesday morning, January 24, 2024, that this agreement applies to several countries, including Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador.
“As Ecuador we have this window of opportunity – although it is not the term we should use – where due to the status of internal armed conflict we can request that the United States implement this comprehensive protection status for Ecuadorians who have a place of residence – non-residents – and “Those who are not regularized can obtain temporary regularization while this situation lasts.”
Sommerfeld added that this temporary status will allow them to work in the North American country. “It is not for everybody; “They must prove that they are Ecuadorian, they do not have their status regularized and, in some cases, a criminal record is requested.”
Agreements with the USA
The chancellor referred to the ruling of the Constitutional Court on international maritime cooperation from the US to Ecuador in the fight against drug trafficking . She called the decision “good news.”
With this, he said, the times to implement these agreements with the North American country are reduced. He said that this week there will be meetings between the US delegation and the different security establishments.
25,000 jobs in Israel
Sommerfeld also spoke about the management of the 25,000 jobs for Ecuadorians in Israel . He said that, at first, there was talk of 2,000, but the need for more was seen and the mentioned number was established.
Israel – he said – has already sent the agreement, which was reviewed by the Ministry of Labor and the necessary adjustments were made for its subscription.
What does it consist of? There are young people registered on a page enabled by President Daniel Noboa. Their profile will be reviewed and placed according to needs.
Situation of Ecuador with Mexico
The head of the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry indicated that there have been several meetings with representatives of Mexico to talk about the situation of former vice president Jorge Glas, who is being held in the Mexican Embassy.
However, he assured, the authorities of that country have not yet made a decision regarding asylum for Glas. In the coming days they will meet to talk about this and other issues related to the reactivation of a free trade agreement (FTA) between Ecuador and Mexico.
