Heavy rains in Guayaquil caused flooding, blackouts and landslides
Different areas of the city reported mudslides and evacuations due to the intensity of the rain, which lasted more than two hours.
In the neighborhood of Bellavista, several families lived moments of distress, after the collapse of one of the back walls of a home. According to the Fire Department Major, Angel Ayala, the landslide from the hill that borders the Catholic University was caused yesterday by the heavy rains. Two children that were locked were evacuated quickly and moved with their relatives. Nearby houses were also in danger of falling.
In the Northwest of the city, rainfall also caused destruction. The water level reached to the knees, although since Wednesday morning MIDUVI machinery began to dig a channel to discharge the accumulated fluid. Both there and in the area of Lomas de la Florida was reported the suspension of electric service.
In areas like Monte Sinai, the National Police had arranged boats to evacuate people from the zone. In several cooperatives site water exceeded five feet high. This complicated the rescue efforts that the military was carrying on. In places like Alborada, Urdesa, Miraflores, Bellavista, in the suburb, south and downtown of the city, waters covered several sections of the streets.
