Hundreds of People Marched For The No Option in the Ecuadorian Plebiscite

Posted On 01 May 2011

Today, hundreds of people gathered at 9:00 am in Chile Park to march for the No option in the next Ecuadorian referendum to be held on May 7th. With flags, banners, shirts with messages like “Don’t leave me unemployed. Support me”, trucks, vans, dancers, dolls, and their voices screaming in unison “Correa lied to us, you messed with us”, demonstrators marched through Brazil, Rumichaca, 5 esquinas, Olmedo Avenue, through the Malecon, la Gobernacion, 9 de octubre and ended in Santa Elena.

The march was attended by members of the UNE, MPD, ASCABI, FEUE, PRIAN, FDTG (Democratic Federation of Workers of Guayas), and other organizations with different colors of shirts. “We can’t be left jobless, at my age it’s very difficult to get a job, I have to pay a rent because I don’t own a house, if I stay out of work, How would I pay?” said one of the demonstrators. “We are here because we want to keep our jobs, we have families for whom we fight, President Correa can’t attack us with a tsunami of unemployment because we have families to support,” said Hector Villena, who marched holding a white billboard.

“We are legal, we are in luxury hotels, we attract tourism, that’s why we are supporting the No option on question 7, we are single mothers, disabled peers, we are more than 100,000 people in the casinos, there are 22 five-star legal casinos,” added Patricia Aguirre, who also marched alongside their fellow workers from Fantasy Casinos and Casino Sol.

The march ended around noon, surrounded by whistles, shouts, and songs like “Not This Time Mr. President”.
