Posted On 08 Jun 2015
A delegation of the Organization of the United Nations for Education, Science and Culture (Unesco) visited various tourist sites in the cantons Antonio Ante, Ibarra, Otavalo, Cotacachi and Urcuquí, in the province of Imbabura, in order to conduct an assessment of the bid submitted by Ecuador to be considered as a geopark.
Experts analysed three main requirements: conservation of the geological heritage; the geoeducacion, which allows residents to teach visitors the benefits and local and sustainable development derived from the Geotourism, i.e. landscapes and geological beauty found in these territories and attract thousands of tourists.
The delegation was formed by Patrick Mac Keeven, leader of the Group; Pablo Rivas, an expert in geology; Jorge Ellis, Programme Specialist of the Unesco in Quito.
