In a year couriers lose almost half of the business
The parcel shipping via the 4×4 system ($ 400 and up to four kilos) has reduced by almost half in a year. Data of the Central Bank of Ecuador, from January to September, indicate that the country reached 88.4 million dollars in international postal traffic and fast mail.
Last year, however, couriers, with a growth trend, reached 160 million (from January to September 2014).
This 45% reduction reverses the increasing trend of Ecuador imports via private mail. This system of private consignment was precisely subjected to regulation to reduce the quantity of imports. The Comex imposed a rate of $ 42 per shipment and restricted to five shipments per year per person, shipments may not exceed $ 1,200.
Companies dedicated to the business raised loud protests and restrictions were removed for migrants living abroad who send gifts to their relatives in Ecuador.
Still, the performance of companies was affected in the first three quarters. Not only dollars but also tons of imports fell through postal channels.
