Islamist Extremist Raise Death Toll in Yemen
Posted On 06 Mar 2012
After a sophisticated attack by Islamist extremists against soldiers in Yemen raised the death toll to 177 on Tuesday. Air raids on militant positions since the attack have left 42 militants dead in Abyan province.
The Sunday assault at an army base by Ansar al-Sharia, an ally of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) claimed the lives of 90 soldiers and many more were wounded. This attack is clear demonstration of defeat to Yemen’s army in a power struggle against AQAP.
The ravaging attack occurred near Zinjibar, a town where Ansar al-Sharia has been active for almost a whole year. (AV)
