Iván Espinel sentenced to 10 years for money laundering
Ecuadortimes:

Former Minister Iván Espinel was declared this Wednesday May 29, guilty for the crime of money laundering as an author. As an Anti-Corruption Secretariat, we have followed up this case so that it does not remain unpunished, always respecting the independence of powers.
The Court of Criminal Guarantees of Durán dictated to him 10 years of prison, confirmed Fiscalía.
The trial hearing began on April 1 in one of the rooms of the Judicial Unit of Durán, and this Wednesday the stage was reached in which the members of the Court issued their verdict.
Espinel, who was an official of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) in the government of former President Rafael Correa and former Minister of Social and Economic Inclusion in the current regime, would not have justified income of more than $ 700,000. He was also a presidential candidate for his Social Commitment movement.
Minutes after the hearing of the opinion was installed, elements of the National Police evacuated the users of the Judicial Complex of Durán, province of Guayas, due to a bomb threat.
Despite the novelty, the audience hearing the opinion against Espinel settled and continued with normality.
Defense of Espinel will appeal
The lawyer of the former official, César García, rejected the sentence, saying that he should have been sentenced by the Law of Prevention of Money Laundering, in case he had been found guilty. Garcia considers that the court improperly assessed the evidence.
García said that they will go to the Provincial Court to appeal and reverse the guilty verdict.
