Journalist Emilio Palacio presented His voluntary resignation to “El Universo”

Posted On 11 Jul 2011

This afternoon, reporter and columnist for the Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo, Emilio Palacio Urrutia, submitted his irrevocable resignation to that newspaper.

The decision was made because both the journalist and three of the executives of the newspaper were sued by Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa for libel. The President asks for three years in prison for each one of them and a compensation of $ 80 million.

Palacio’s voluntary resignation letter to El Universo adduces:

“(…) The source of employment and livelihood of about one thousand employees of the institution is in great danger today (…) in these conditions we must all accept the reality. “(…) I hope that this decision will lead the President to withdrawn his lawsuit against El Universo and against Mr. Carlos, César and Nicholas Pérez. If he insists to continue with the lawsuit against me, I accept it (…)”. (BG)
