Ecuadornews:
Thursday, opposition leader Guillermo Lasso asked President Lenin Moreno, in a video broadcast on Twitter, to call a referendum for the ‘democratic reinstitutionalization of Ecuador.’ And he specified two fundamental issues: the elimination of indefinite re-election and the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS).
Lasso said that indefinite re-election unbalances the basic principle of democracy and subjects the state apparatus to the executive, “because it forces officials to take shelter under those who have advantages in future elections or hold power.”
Regarding the CPCCS, Lasso said that this body is made up only of members of the Alianza PAIS (AP) ruling party, and this supervisory body was in charge of appointing former Comptroller General Carlos Pólit, former Attorney General Galo Chiriboga, as well as the members of the Judicial Council. “This is not a Citizen Participation Council but a citizen elimination council,” he added.
“President Lenin Moreno, take your chance. This referendum will have the support of the CREO parliamentary bloc,” he urged. (I)
