María Alejandra Vicuña resigns from the Vice Presidency of Ecuador: ‘The country requires and needs peace to move forward’
María Alejandra Vicuña presented this Tuesday, December 4, 2018 her resignation from the Vice Presidency of Ecuador, one day after President Lenín Moreno will release her from her duties and she will request leave without pay until December 31st. The president of Alianza Bolivariana Alfarista (ABA), Leonardo Vicuña, confirmed it to this newspaper.
Leonardo Vicuña, a leftist politician, had warned in the morning that she “does not cling to the position” and that “she is willing to leave it so that there are no pretexts to alter the tranquility of the country.” Minutes later, a statement and video were released with the resignation of Vicuña.”I present the resignation to my position, because I prefer that he (Lenin Moreno) can count on someone else to assume definitively the greatres ponsibilities that he entrusted to me. The country wants and needs peace to move forward, “said the also ABA militant.
“Yesterday I thought about a license and it was communicated to whom I think should first know. However, I believe that the country does not deserve this instability. I am not going to lend myself to rumors of crossed death, resignation of the President or serious national commotion, “says María Alejandra Vicuña in a video released on Tuesday. And Vicuña continues: “A Vice Presidency without functions does not conduce what the country needs:work, productive and economic reactivation, generation of wealth to be able to guarantee its just distribution, always prioritizing the poorest. And although the President of the Republic has reiterated his affection for me and I understand that freeing myself from the functions seeks to guarantee my legitimate right to defense, I will present the irrevocable resignation to the position.”
Consulted by EL COMERCIO, Leonardo Vicuña confirmed on Tuesday that in the investigation process that initiated the Prosecutor’s Office of course charging ‘tithe’ will prove the innocence of Vicuña and said that they seek to cause harm to create political instability.
The vice president is investigated in the Office of the Prosecutor by the complaint of former collaborator Ángel Sagbay, according to which Vicuña received deposits in his personal account from officials who collaborated with her when she was an assembly member.
María Alejandra Vicuña admitted these deposits, as contributions for the ABA movement. She denied that these money were a form of payment in exchange for keeping those state workers in positions. She also acknowledged that the deposits were made in her bank account.
Ina clip of more than six minutes, Vicuña says this Tuesday. “The problem is bad faith, the problem is the ambition (of) those who seek that the space of the Vice Presidency is not occupied by a woman of the left, who is also a militant of a process that millions have helped to build and question it to adjust it and to correct it in what was, is and is necessary.”
Vicuña,40, who officially assumed the second magistracy on January 6, said the decision to resign was taken after a deep reflection. He said that since he assumed the Vice Presidency has been the victim of attacks, slander and infamy”of the worst kind.” “They have dug my life, they have not foundany thing; they have used an unscrupulous individual who has lent himself to forge this baseness, which, if it were already a sentence, presented him selfmaliciously to the public in a media without the slightest contrast, without asking for my version, “said Vicuña in a statement issued this Tuesday along with a video.
Vicuña also questioned that 77 legislators have asked for her resignation in the National Assembly without having requested her appearance. According to the Vice President, she will defend herself as a citizen and not “from the Vice Presidency, despite the fact that everyone knows that this ruse is for the position I hold.” (I)
